Cave Run Lake Description

Cave Run Lake is a beautiful place to visit! It is a great place for family vacations, reunions, camping retreats, golfing, horse back riding, fishing, hunting, and boating. Many rentals are located within walking distance to Cave Run Lake. There are many rental cabins that will put you in the heart of all Cave Run has to to offer. Start your day off with a picnic or a quick swim in the lake. If you prefer camping, Cave Run Lake has several campgrounds available to accommodate visitors. RV's are welcome! Boating is very popular throughout the area (boat rental is available at the local marinas) as well as fishing and hunting. If you like Muskie, you'll love fishing Cave Run! Horse back riding and hiking is also available for those wishing to explore the wildlife of Cave Run. ATV riding and hiking is also available for those wishing to explore the wildlife of the Cave Run Lake area. Be sure to check out White Sulphur ATV Trails. Once you visit Cave Run Lake and experience all that the Daniel Boone National Forest has to offer, you will probably become a return visitor. There are beautiful scenic byways along Cave Run Lake and the surrounding countryside. Cave Run Lake was created by damming up the Licking River. It is a man made impoundment of nearly 8,300 acres of water to enjoy. An added bonus is that you won't find any privately owned homes or store-fronts while on the water, which adds to the uniqueness of Cave Run Lake. Cave Run also offers the sportsman an adventure not soon forgotten, Cave Run Lake is known as the Muskie Capital of the south and with good reason. On September 21, 2001, the new state record muskie was taken in Cave Run Lake - 54 1/2 inches and 44.75 lbs. Enjoy the wide variety of fishing in the lake and surrounding waters. Our waters are host to not only muskie, but are also great for bass, crappie, catfish, and trout fishing.

Cave Run Lake, located south of Morehead, Kentucky, USA along Kentucky Route 801, is an 8,270-acre (33 km2), reservoir built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The 148 ft (45 m), half-mile (800 m) dam (and outlet works) construction began in 1965 and was completed in 1973. Cave Run Lake is in the northern part of the Daniel Boone National Forest.[1] Cave Run Lake provides flood protection to the lower Licking River valley, supplies water to the area's communities, improves the Licking River's water flow conditions, and offers a habitat for various species of fish and wildlife.
